It's needed - and needed now. The Global Wind Energy Council and Green Peace released Wind Force 12: a blueprint to achieve 12% of the world's electricity from wind power to 2020. The summary report indicates the following:

While it's clear that wind power can benefit us all, barriers remain to the development of wind energy; namely the ability to generate at a large enough scale and the ability to store and regenerate on demand.
